Easiest from Cozihaus on Blodgett Lake
Hatcher Pass & Independence Mine

Hatcher Pass is the Mat-Su Valley's alpine backyard, a mountain corridor above Palmer and Wasilla where the road climbs out of the valley floor into open, treeless ridgelines in well under an hour. Historic Independence Mine anchors the area with real mining-era buildings and context, set against genuine alpine scenery and a real sense of open country close to home.
The same corridor holds an easy lakeside walk, a real ridge hike, and a substantial full-day trek, so the range from easy scenic stops to significant hiking is genuine, not a marketing claim — pick the version that fits the day you actually have. Whichever you choose, it starts from the same drive out of Palmer and Wasilla, so committing to Hatcher Pass does not mean committing to any one version of it.
Stay flexible once you are up there: the pass makes its own weather, and access above treeline is seasonal.

Who this suits
A half day or a relaxed full day in the mountains. Good for couples, families, photographers, and history-minded guests.
A plan that works
- Leave after breakfast or early lunch — there is no advantage to rushing this one.
- Drive toward Palmer and up into Hatcher Pass, stopping at the overlooks where it is safe to pull off.
- Visit Independence Mine State Historical Park if the road, gate, and seasonal access are open on your dates.
- Keep the schedule loose. Short walks, photographs, and a picnic are the point.
- Come back through Palmer or Wasilla depending on whether you want food, fuel, or groceries on the way.
- If you want a longer day, the Reed Lakes trail climbs above treeline from the same area — budget five to six hours round trip and pack layers.
Practical notes
- Parking at the Independence Mine lot is a small fee; the drive and overlooks themselves are free.
- Bring layers regardless of the forecast in the Valley — it is exposed above treeline.
- Wildflowers are usually best in July and blueberries by August, though timing varies with the season.
- Late afternoon into sunset is the best light on the ridges.
Drive and timing, honestly
- Roughly 35 minutes from Cozihaus on Blodgett Lake; closer to an hour and ten from Cozihaus in Spenard.
- From Spenard, treat this as a full day rather than a half day, and allow extra time for Anchorage-to-Mat-Su traffic.
- The road is paved most of the way, with a short gravel stretch near the parking area that can wash out after heavy rain.
- Mountain weather changes quickly. Conditions at the parking lot are often nothing like conditions in the Valley.
What we won’t promise
- We cannot promise clear mountain views. The pass makes its own weather.
- We cannot confirm that Independence Mine is open, or its hours, without checking your specific dates — access and visitor services are seasonal.
- We cannot promise easy parking, open facilities, available tours, or full road access.
- Trail conditions and snow-free dates shift year to year. Ask us before you count on a specific hike.
Prepare for Hatcher Pass
- Bring layers regardless of the forecast in the Valley — it is exposed above treeline.
- Upper road and mine access are seasonal, weather-dependent.
- Check current road, gate, and parking conditions before you go — full access above the mine isn't guaranteed on any given day.
