A half day or a relaxed full day in the mountains. Good for couples, families, photographers, and history-minded guests.

A plan that works

  1. Leave after breakfast or early lunch — there is no advantage to rushing this one.
  2. Drive toward Palmer and up into Hatcher Pass, stopping at the overlooks where it is safe to pull off.
  3. Visit Independence Mine State Historical Park if the road, gate, and seasonal access are open on your dates.
  4. Keep the schedule loose. Short walks, photographs, and a picnic are the point.
  5. Come back through Palmer or Wasilla depending on whether you want food, fuel, or groceries on the way.
  6. If you want a longer day, the Reed Lakes trail climbs above treeline from the same area — budget five to six hours round trip and pack layers.

Drive and timing, honestly

  • Roughly 35 minutes from Cozihaus on Blodgett Lake; closer to an hour and ten from Cozihaus in Spenard.
  • From Spenard, treat this as a full day rather than a half day, and allow extra time for Anchorage-to-Mat-Su traffic.
  • The road is paved most of the way, with a short gravel stretch near the parking area that can wash out after heavy rain.
  • Mountain weather changes quickly. Conditions at the parking lot are often nothing like conditions in the Valley.

Getting around Hatcher Pass

Hatcher Pass Road is the main corridor through the area. Summit Lake and April Bowl sit close together higher in the pass, while Reed Lakes is reached from the Archangel Road side. Independence Mine makes a useful central reference point.
