Cooper Landing

Cooper Landing sits on the Sterling Highway at the north end of Kenai Lake — a small community (a few hundred people) that punches well above its size every summer. It's the natural hub for the Upper Kenai River: guided drift-boat fishing for rainbow trout and salmon, rafting from gentle floats to real Class III whitewater in the Kenai Canyon, and the turnoff for Russian River. It's also where the Sterling Highway continues west toward Soldotna and the rest of the peninsula, so it works as both a destination and a decision point.

Guests who want real Kenai Peninsula fishing or rafting, anyone continuing west toward Soldotna or Homer, and travelers who want a genuine Upper Kenai stop rather than a highway pass-through. Works as a destination on its own or as the first leg of a longer peninsula day.

A plan that works

  1. Decide what Cooper Landing is FOR on this trip — fishing, rafting, Russian River, or simply the drive south — rather than trying to do all of it in one day.
  2. For fishing, book a guide ahead if you want the Upper Kenai's drift-boat float; walk-in bank fishing is also real, especially near Russian River.
  3. For rafting, established outfitters run everything from gentle half-day floats to a full Kenai Canyon whitewater day — match the trip to your group's appetite.
  4. If Russian River itself is the goal, treat that as its own stop (see the Russian River guide) rather than an add-on to a Cooper Landing afternoon.
  5. If you're continuing to Soldotna or Homer, Cooper Landing works well as a first stop rather than the whole day.
