Easiest from Cozihaus on Blodgett Lake

Matanuska Glacier sits out the Glenn Highway east of Palmer, in a beautiful stretch of mountains along the Matanuska River. The defining value here is proximity — under current guided access arrangements, you can walk on the ice itself, which is not something most Alaska glaciers offer.

Who this suits

Guests who want to be close to a glacier, whether or not an athletic outing is the point — the scenery and photography hold up on their own. A guided walk is the default recommendation.

A plan that works

  1. Book a guided glacier walk in advance — demand runs high on clear summer days.
  2. Leave by mid-morning and give the day to it. The drive out the Glenn is scenic and a real part of the day.
  3. Give it the full day. A simple stop in Palmer on the way is fine; stacking a second full destination onto the same day is not.
  4. The state recreation site along the highway is a viewing stop, not the way onto the ice — the close-up access is a separate, private arrangement.

Drive and timing, honestly

  • No drive time is stated from either property — none has been measured.
  • The Glenn Highway east of Palmer is a long, scenic, paved drive. Meaningfully shorter from Cozihaus on Blodgett Lake than from Cozihaus in Spenard.

  • Matanuska and Knik are two different glacier trips, in different directions, asking different things of a guest. Ask us if you are weighing the two.
