Soldotna

Soldotna sits at the junction of the Sterling Highway and the Kenai Spur Highway, which has made it the practical service and retail hub for the central Kenai Peninsula. Its real identity, though, is the Kenai River — the most heavily fished river in the state, running right through town. Soldotna is where the 1985 world-record king salmon (97 pounds 4 ounces) was caught, and it remains a serious fishing base, not just a fuel-and-groceries stop on the way to Homer.

Guests whose Kenai Peninsula day is built around fishing, and anyone using it as a practical base for continuing deeper into the peninsula. Less a standalone sightseeing stop than a real fishing hub and a useful staging point.
