The visitor center and the valley around it are worth the stop on their own: no reservation, no ticket cost, no waiting on a departure. If you specifically want to get close to the ice, a boat cruise out onto the lake is there too, as an upgrade you book ahead.

Who this suits

Every guest passing through Portage Valley, at whatever level of commitment they choose. A flexible half day gets the visitor center and the valley for free; a guest who wants more can book the boat.

A plan that works

  1. Start with the free, flexible version — the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center and the surrounding valley are a substantial stop on their own.
  2. Treat the boat cruise as an upgrade, not the default plan — worth it specifically if getting close to the ice is the goal, but it adds cost, booking, and schedule dependence.
  3. Check current schedule, availability, and pricing near your trip if the cruise is something you want — we don't quote these as fixed facts.
  4. The drive into the valley is itself part of the day — water flowing from Portage Lake forms a scenic river as you enter from the Seward Highway.
  5. If you want more, Portage Pass is a separate, more active hike nearby — ask us about it directly.
