Part of a Portage Valley day, easiest from Cozihaus in Spenard
Byron Glacier
You park, walk in on your own schedule, and spend time in a dramatic glacial valley below Byron Glacier — no boarding time, no ticket, no tour to work around.

Who this suits
Guests who want a real glacial-valley experience without booking anything. Easy and appropriate for a broad range of guests — families, guests with limited hiking experience, and anyone who wants a substantial outing in under two hours of walking.
A plan that works
- Treat this as self-paced, not a tour — park, walk in, spend as much time as feels right, and leave.
- The easy walking commitment is under roughly a mile and a half, following the glacier-fed creek into a debris and boulder field below the glacier.
- There is often some lower snow and ice still reachable near the base of the valley, but that changes through the season — the walk and the glacial valley are the reason to go, not the ice.
- We would not send you scrambling further into the boulder field to reach retreated ice higher up — that's rough terrain and not the standard recommendation.
- Pair it with the rest of a Portage Valley day — Portage Glacier and the visitor center, Explorer Glacier, or the Trail of Blue Ice.
Drive and timing, honestly
- No drive time is stated from either property — none has been measured. Byron Glacier is in Portage Valley, along the Turnagain Arm / Seward Highway corridor.
- Plan on a half day for this stop, with room to add other Portage-area stops in the same outing.
What we won’t promise
- We would not call the trail accessible to everybody — it is easy and appropriate for a broad range of guests, not an ADA-verified route.
- We cannot promise reachable snow or ice near the base of the valley. It's currently there in most conditions but it's retreating and changes season to season — it's a bonus, not the plan.
- We do not recommend ice caves, snow caves, or walking onto the glacier itself.
- We cannot promise current trail, parking, or road conditions.
Practical notes
- No reservation or tour booking needed — this is a self-paced walk.
- Bring real footwear; the boulder field near the base of the valley is uneven.
- Combine it with the rest of a Portage Valley day rather than treating it as a single destination trip.
