Alaska State Fair

The Alaska State Fair has run in Palmer since 1936, and it's one of the best places to see the Mat-Su Valley's agricultural identity concentrated in one place — Alaska-grown crops, giant vegetables, livestock and agricultural exhibits, local producers, Fair food, and entertainment.

Who this suits

First-time Alaska visitors, families, agriculture and local-food travelers, photographers, and anyone wanting a substantial half-day or full-day outing in late summer.

A plan that works

  1. Spend meaningful time in the agricultural exhibit areas rather than treating the Fair only as rides and concerts.
  2. If agriculture is the draw, check the current daily schedule before you leave so you can catch a weigh-off, judging, or livestock event on your day.
  3. 2026 dates are August 21 – September 7, hours 11:00 AM–10:00 PM, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays (Aug 25, 26 and Sep 1, 2).
  4. The 30th Annual Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off is September 4, 2026 at 6:00 PM — the Fair's longstanding record is Scott Robb's 138.25-pound cabbage from 2012.

  • About 30 minutes / 19 miles from Cozihaus on Blodgett Lake, per prior property notes — worth reconfirming before we quote an exact time.
  • A longer outing from Cozihaus in Spenard, but still a reasonable Palmer/Mat-Su day trip rather than a neighborhood stop.

  • We cannot guarantee a particular giant vegetable will be on display, or a specific animal, exhibit, or vendor.
  • We cannot promise a specific event lines up with your visit, or concert and ticket availability.
