The Turnagain Arm / Seward Highway drive

The Seward Highway runs along Turnagain Arm and then over onto the Kenai Peninsula. Girdwood, Portage, Whittier, Hope, and Seward are all points along it. The drive itself is the experience — a guest who drives the corridor and stops nowhere still had a good day.

Who this suits

Guests who like driving, or who are content for the drive to be a real part of the day. The question is really how much of the road you want to give the day, not which single stop to pick.

A plan that works

  1. Decide how much of the road you want to give the day — a half day gets Girdwood and the Arm; a full day gets Portage and Whittier.
  2. Watch for Dall sheep and birds along the mountainsides — possible, never guaranteed.
  3. If the tide is right, the bore tide is a real phenomenon worth watching for, sometimes with surfers — also never guaranteed.
  4. Stay on established pullouts and never walk onto the mudflats. This is the one firm rule of the drive.

  • The corridor starts almost immediately from Cozihaus in Spenard; from Cozihaus on Blodgett Lake it starts on the far side of Anchorage.

  • We cannot promise Dall sheep, birds, belugas, or any other wildlife along the drive.
  • We cannot promise bore tide timing or that surfers will be present.
  • We cannot promise the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel schedule for a Whittier detour.
  • We cannot promise weather on the Arm.

Practical notes

  • Never walk onto the Turnagain Arm mudflats, for any reason.
  • Whittier is a spur off Portage through a scheduled one-lane tunnel, not a stop along the corridor — its timing is set by the tunnel, not the drive.
