Flattop Mountain

Flattop and Glen Alps are one of Anchorage's easiest gateways into the Chugach. You can get broad views over Anchorage and Cook Inlet with very little walking from the overlook area, or use the same trailhead for anything from an easy outing to a much more demanding mountain hike. Flattop itself is popular and the upper route is a real hike — loose rock, real elevation gain, steeper terrain — but you do not need to summit it to make the trip worthwhile.

Who this suits

First-time Anchorage visitors, photographers, and anyone who wants mountain views without a major hike — the overlook asks very little of you. From the same trailhead, active hikers get a real Chugach outing at Flattop's summit. Families and mixed-ability groups can go as far as suits them and turn back at any point; nobody needs to reach the top to justify the visit.

A plan that works

Easy: park at Glen Alps and walk the short overlook path for broad Anchorage and Cook Inlet views — very little elevation gain.
Moderate: continue partway up the lower trail past the overlook at your own pace, turning back whenever the group is ready — reaching Flattop's summit is never required to make the stop worthwhile.
Active: continue to the Flattop summit itself — a real hike, with loose rock and real elevation gain on the upper section, not a stroll.
Whichever level you pick, check weather and wind before you go — conditions at the summit area can differ sharply from the trailhead.
Parking at Glen Alps can fill, especially on weekends and in good weather — have a backup plan.
