Crow Creek Mine

Crow Creek Mine has operated since 1896, when gold drew the first prospectors to this valley decades before anyone skied Mount Alyeska — at its peak, the Crow Creek and Glacier Creek mining camps together held over 2,000 people, far more than Girdwood's own population today. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, the mine's original buildings are described as among the oldest structures in the Anchorage municipality. The Toohey family has run it as a real, visitable site since 1969: self-guided walking among the historic buildings and equipment, plus paid gold panning for anyone who wants to try it.
